Overview

MicroRNA 1302-4 (MIR1302-4) is a member of the microRNA 1302 family, a group of short (20-24 nucleotide) non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in multicellular organisms. MIR1302-4 is processed from longer primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) by the enzymes Drosha and Dicer to produce a mature miRNA molecule, which is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). Through imperfect base pairing, MIR1302-4 guides the RISC to target mRNAs, resulting in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. MIR1302-4 and related family members are derived from MER53 DNA transposable elements and are specific to placental mammals, indicating a role in mammalian or possibly placental development. Functionally, the miR-1302 family is predicted to regulate genes involved in cellular transportation, localization, system development, and positive regulation of cellular processes, frequently linked with binding and transcription regulation. The specific biological function and therapeutic relevance of MIR1302-4 remain largely uncharacterized, with no established role as a therapeutic target or associations with drugs or biomarkers at this time.
