Overview

MicroRNA-1303 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (~19–25 nucleotides) that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to complementary sequences in mRNAs, thereby repressing translation or promoting mRNA degradation. Aberrant miR-1303 expression has been implicated in various cancers, where it often acts as an oncogene by promoting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and chemoresistance through modulation of signaling pathways such as Wnt/β-catenin, PI3K/AKT, and MAPK. It targets several tumor suppressor and oncogenic proteins, directly influencing disease progression. miR-1303 is also associated with other conditions including type 2 diabetes and infection, and is being investigated as a biomarker for cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic response. Modulation of miR-1303 activity via oligonucleotide-based drugs is an area of active preclinical research, but faces challenges related to specificity and delivery.

Mechanism of action

Drugs or agents modulating miR-1303 work by: Inhibiting miR-1303 with antisense oligonucleotides, leading to upregulation of tumor suppressor genes and inhibition of oncogenic pathways (e.g., DKK3/Wnt/β-catenin, TLN1, CLDN18). Mimicking miR-1303 (for possible tumor-suppressor roles, context-dependent).
