Overview

MicroRNA 1306 (miR-1306) is a small non-coding RNA molecule (~22 nucleotides) involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. It acts by binding to complementary sequences in the 3′-untranslated regions (UTR) of target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or repression of translation. miR-1306 has been shown to promote apoptosis in granulosa cells by targeting and downregulating Transforming Growth Factor Beta Receptor II (TGFBR2), thereby suppressing TGF-β/SMAD signaling, which is critical for cell survival and ovarian follicular development[1]. Additionally, miR-1306-3p has been reported to function extracellularly as an endogenous ligand that directly activates P2X purinoceptor 3 (P2X3) ion channels in sensory neurons, contributing to chronic visceral pain by inducing rapid calcium influx and inward currents in dorsal root ganglion neurons[2]. While the canonical role of miR-1306 is as a gene-silencing miRNA, its unique ability to act directly on ion channels suggests novel, nontraditional mechanisms in neurobiology and pain signaling. Experimental data also links miR-1306 to functions in cancer, neurodegeneration, and female fertility, highlighting it as a node in apoptosis and developmental signaling in mammals[1][2].
