The MicroRNA 130a host gene (MIR130AHG) encodes miR-130a, a short non-coding RNA (microRNA) involved in the regulation of gene expression by targeting and downregulating specific mRNAs, most notably via effects on their stability and translation. miR-130a modulates diverse cellular processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune cell polarization, and metastasis. It is implicated in pathogenesis and therapeutic resistance in various cancers, modulates the fibrotic response in liver injury (including schistosomiasis and cirrhosis), and is enriched in extracellular vesicles from metastatic melanoma, influencing the metastatic niche. Experimentally, miR-130a has been shown to target key signaling molecules such as MAPK1, TGFBR1, TGFBR2 (important in liver fibrosis and cancer), and TSC1 (a tumor suppressor in oral squamous cell carcinoma). Its activity can be modulated by synthetic mimics (to enhance) or antagomirs (to inhibit), and it is under consideration both as a therapeutic target and a biomarker in select disease settings.
Antagomirs or synthetic inhibitors bind and inhibit miR-130a function. Mimics or overexpression approaches increase miR-130a activity to alter target gene expression.
