Overview

MicroRNA 130b (miR-130b) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, most notably through silencing of target messenger RNAs. It is encoded in humans by the MIR130B gene. miR-130b is upregulated in multiple aggressive cancers including glioma, colorectal cancer, leiomyosarcoma, and others, where it promotes malignant processes such as cell proliferation, migration, invasion, EMT, and angiogenesis, typically via direct inhibition of tumor suppressor genes including PPARγ, TSC1, and PTEN. High levels of miR-130b in tumors or plasma are associated with poor prognosis and increased tumor aggressiveness. Therapeutic targeting of miR-130b with antisense oligonucleotides is under experimental investigation. The functions of miR-130b can be context-dependent, with occasional tumor suppressor roles observed in specific cell types[1][2][3][4].
