MicroRNA 133a-2 (miR-133a-2) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule encoded in the human genome, classified as a microRNA. It functions as a regulator of gene expression by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs, thereby leading to inhibition of mRNA translation or mRNA destabilization. MiR-133a-2, whose mature sequence is identical to that of miR-133a-1, plays important roles in both physiological and pathological contexts, most notably as a tumor suppressor in a variety of cancers and as a regulator of cardiac and skeletal muscle development. Its downregulation is frequently observed in cancer tissues, where it is associated with increased tumor proliferation and poor prognosis. It also participates in regulating cardiac hypertrophy and arrhythmias, and its expression is altered in cardiac and muscular diseases. Due to its diagnostic and prognostic value, miR-133a-2 is studied as a noninvasive biomarker in liquid biopsies for early cancer detection and disease monitoring[1][2][3][4].
