MicroRNA 1343 is a short non-coding RNA of 20–24 nucleotides that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally, primarily via binding to target mRNAs and promoting their degradation or inhibiting their translation. In human cells, miR-1343 plays a substantial role in repressing the TGF-β signaling pathway by directly targeting both TGFBR1 and TGFBR2 receptors, leading to decreased activation of fibrosis-related pathways. This microRNA is of special therapeutic interest due to its ability to attenuate fibrotic marker expression and has implications for fibrotic diseases such as lung fibrosis and cystic fibrosis. Delivery of miR-1343 via exosomes has demonstrated measurable reduction in pro-fibrotic signaling, supporting its candidacy for future microRNA-based therapies.
RNA interference: miR-1343 binds imperfectly to the 3' UTR regions of specific mRNAs (notably, TGFBR1 and TGFBR2), leading to mRNA translational inhibition or destabilization. Downregulation of canonical TGF-β receptors, thereby reducing pathway signaling and attenuating fibrotic marker expression.
