MicroRNA 135a-1 (miR-135a-1) is a short non-coding RNA molecule encoded in humans by the MIR135A1 gene, which modulates gene expression by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) and suppressing their translation or promoting degradation[4]. It acts primarily as a regulatory molecule, influencing multiple cellular pathways, including those controlling cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, neural function, and development[4]. Notably, miR-135a-1 exhibits tumor-suppressive functions in certain cancers such as pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and gastric cancer, where its downregulation is associated with tumor progression; it can inhibit oncogenes such as Bmi1 and ROCK1 in these settings[1][2]. It also plays important roles in the nervous system, including regulation of neuronal morphology, synaptic function, and adult neurogenesis[4]. Abnormal regulation or expression of miR-135a-1 has been implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and other pathological conditions[4]. No approved drugs directly target miR-135a-1, but modulation of its expression is being investigated as a therapeutic strategy and its levels may serve as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker in various diseases.
