Overview

MicroRNA 135a-2 (MIR135A2) is a short (~21-22 nt) non-coding RNA molecule transcribed from the MIR135A2 gene (chromosome 12q23.1 in humans) and processed to mature miR-135a[1][4][5]. miR-135a-2 is one of two loci (along with MIR135A1) that produce miR-135a. This microRNA regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding target mRNAs, causing translational inhibition or destabilization via the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[4]. MIR135A2 participates in key biological processes including neural development, cellular proliferation, and signaling pathway regulation. Dysregulation of miR-135a-2 is implicated in several cancers (as either tumor suppressor or oncogene, context-dependent), as well as neurological and cardiovascular diseases[1][2][3]. It is being explored both as a biomarker and as a therapeutic target through miRNA-based interventions, but clinical applications are still under development.

miRNA mimics to restore downregulated miR-135a, inducing tumor suppressor effects (e.g., cell cycle arrest, inhibition of proliferation via c-MYC repression); miRNA inhibitors (anti-miRs) to block oncogenic effects when miR-135a is upregulated (as in some bladder cancers)
