Target intelligence / Profile preview
MicroRNA 135a-5p (miR-135a-5p) target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) represent a diverse population of transcripts regulated by the miR-135a-5p microRNA through sequence-specific binding to their 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs). This regulatory interaction typically results in the degradation of the target mRNA or the inhibition of its translation, thereby modulating the expression of proteins involved in critical cellular pathways (Chen et al., 2019, Aging [PMID: 31175145]). miR-135a-5p has been identified as a key regulator in various diseases, acting as a tumor suppressor in some contexts by targeting oncogenes like ROCK1 and JAK2, or as an oncomir in others by targeting tumor suppressors like APC (Chen et al., 2019, Oncology Reports [PMID: 30628693]; Zhou et al., 2017, Biomedical Reports [PMID: 28663875]). In neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, miR-135a-5p targets SIRT1, influencing amyloid-beta production and neuronal survival (Chen et al., 2019, Aging [PMID: 31175145]). Therapeutic intervention strategies involve the use of synthetic miR-135a-5p mimics to restore its function or antagomirs to inhibit its activity, depending on the disease state. The "other" seed-matched targets refer to the broader network of mRNAs that may be affected by such therapies, necessitating careful evaluation of off-target effects and systemic safety.
MicroRNA mimics or antagomirs modulate the expression of these targets by either supplementing the endogenous miRNA pool to enhance silencing or sequestering the miRNA to prevent it from binding to the 3'UTRs of these mRNAs.
