MicroRNA 136 (miR-136) is a short (typically 20-22 nucleotides) non-coding RNA molecule of the microRNA family, endogenously transcribed and processed through canonical miRNA biogenesis pathways. miR-136 plays an important regulatory role in post-transcriptional gene expression by binding to target mRNAs, resulting in translational repression or degradation of these transcripts. It is involved in diverse physiological processes including the regulation of immune responses, acting both as a modulator of cytokine genes (such as IL-6 and IFN-β) and as a ligand for certain pattern recognition receptors like RIG-I, thereby contributing to antiviral defense and innate immunity. miR-136 has also been implicated in oncogenesis, with altered expression associated with various cancers, and is transcribed from imprinted clusters, suggesting additional regulatory functions in development and epigenetics. Currently, it is not considered a classical therapeutic drug target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter, but remains a significant regulator in cellular signaling and disease.
