Overview

MicroRNA 147a (MIR147A) is a small non-coding RNA molecule (typically 20–24 nucleotides) involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by targeting messenger RNA (mRNA) for translational repression or degradation. It acts as a regulatory node affecting cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, inflammation, and hypoxic response by modulating multiple target genes, including HIF-3α, VEGFA, ZEB2, IRX5, and PTEN[1][2]. MIR147A is dynamically regulated in response to stress, inflammatory signals, and hypoxia, and has been identified as a tumor-suppressive and disease-modifying microRNA in several cancer types (breast, colon, lung, liver), cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and conditions involving pathological inflammation[1][2]. Its circulating and tissue levels are being investigated as disease biomarkers, and its pleiotropic regulatory functions make it a promising but challenging therapeutic target. No direct drug inhibitors or mimics are currently approved for clinical use, but its targeting potential is under research for new therapeutic modalities[1][2].
