Overview

MicroRNA 151a (miR-151a) is a small non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA class, involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting mRNA stability and translation. miR-151a is transcribed as a primary miRNA (pri-miR-151a), processed to a precursor (pre-miR-151a) and ultimately to a mature miRNA, which is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). Through partial base pairing with target mRNAs, it predominantly mediates translational repression and destabilization of target transcripts. Both the 5p and 3p strands may be expressed, and miR-151a is subject to a regulatory mechanism called A-to-I (adenosine-to-inosine) RNA editing that can inhibit its maturation and thereby modulate its cellular activity. miR-151a is part of the miR-15/107 group, which plays roles in cell cycle regulation, division, metabolism, stress responses, and angiogenesis. Members of this group, including miR-151a, have overlapping mRNA targets and are implicated in cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and metabolic diseases. There is currently no direct evidence of clinically approved drugs specifically targeting miR-151a, nor of its established utility as a clinical biomarker or documented therapeutic safety risks.
