MicroRNA-17 (miR-17) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that belongs to the microRNA class and plays a critical role in regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. It is part of the miR-17/92 cluster. It functions primarily as a negative regulator of gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation. It regulates fundamental cellular processes including cell cycle progression, cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis. It is also involved in heart, lung, and immune system development. Dysregulation of miR-17 is associated with various diseases, including cancer and fibrosis.
