Overview

MicroRNA 182 (miR-182) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule that post-transcriptionally regulates gene expression by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions of target mRNAs, promoting their degradation or translational repression[1][2]. It is involved in neuronal development—directing axon and dendrite outgrowth via the PI3K/AKT and PTEN pathways—and cellular processes such as apoptosis, proliferation, and migration[1][2]. miR-182 is highly expressed in neural tissues and certain cancers, where it exerts both oncogenic and tumor-suppressor functions depending on context[4]. It also plays a crucial role in bone metabolism, where inhibition of miR-182 protects against bone loss and inhibits osteoclastogenesis[3]. Circulating and tissue levels of miR-182 serve as biomarkers for disease detection and prognosis in oncology and musculoskeletal medicine[4].
