Overview

microRNA-184 (miR-184) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule, classified as a microRNA, that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target messenger RNAs and either repressing translation or promoting transcript degradation[2]. In humans, miR-184 is encoded by the MIR184 gene located on chromosome 15q25.1 and displays a tissue-specific expression pattern—especially in the brain, testis, and corneal epithelium—and plays crucial roles in neural stem/progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation, eye development, and keratinocyte migration[1][2][3]. Aberrant expression or function of miR-184 has been implicated in cancer, where it can act primarily as a tumor suppressor, as well as in neurological and ocular diseases. While no clinically approved drugs directly target miR-184, experimental approaches use oligonucleotide-based therapies (anti-miRs or mimics) to modulate its function as a strategy for correcting dysregulated gene expression in disease contexts[1][2].
