Overview

MicroRNA 193a (MIR193A, also known as hsa-mir-193a) is a non-coding RNA gene encoding a hairpin precursor miRNA. After cellular processing, this precursor gives rise to the mature microRNAs miR-193a-3p and miR-193a-5p. As a major post-transcriptional regulator, mir-193a can suppress target gene expression by binding to their mRNAs, leading to translational repression or degradation. MIR193A is widely studied for its roles in the negative regulation of cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, and tumor growth, especially in cancers where it frequently exhibits tumor-suppressor activities. Its functions are context-dependent and can influence cellular pathways involved in apoptosis, migration, invasion, and angiogenesis, and it can act as both a tumor suppressor and—under certain circumstances—an oncomiR. Clinical research focuses on its value as a cancer biomarker (including circulating miRNA detection) and as a potential therapeutic target, though safety and specificity remain active challenges.
