microRNA 1972-2 (miR-1972-2)

Target
miR-1972-2
Molecular classification
Non-coding RNA, MicroRNA (miRNA), Regulatory RNA
01

Overview

microRNA 1972-2 is a non-coding RNA gene that encodes a ~22-nucleotide microRNA involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Like other microRNAs, miR-1972-2 is processed from a primary transcript, incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), and regulates gene expression typically by binding imperfectly to target mRNAs, resulting in translational repression or degradation. Research in cell lines suggests miR-1972 may regulate genes involved in proliferation, metastasis, and angiogenesis—especially impacting breast cancer cell migration and growth as well as expression of angiogenesis markers and von Willebrand factor (VWF). No drugs have been documented to directly interact with MIR1972-2; however, experimental use of microRNA mimics or inhibitors is ongoing in research contexts.

Mechanism of action

Gene silencing via RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC); Translational inhibition or target mRNA destabilization through imperfect base-pairing with mRNA's 3' UTR.

03

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional gene regulationmRNA stability and translation inhibitionRegulation of genes involved in cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenesis
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably in breast cancer and possibly in head and neck cancer subtypes)Further disease roles are possible but not specifically documented for this miRNA.
05

Safety considerations

As a therapeutic target, microRNAs can impact multiple genes and pathways, raising concerns about specificity and off-target effects if used in therapy.
06

Biomarkers

Proposed as a biomarker for cancer subtyping or progression (e.g., distinguishing HPV– head and neck tumors, breast cancer progression)
