Overview

MicroRNA 199a-2 (MIR199A2) is a non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 1 in humans, embedded in the antisense strand of the DNM3 gene, and together with its homolog from chromosome 19 (MIR199A1) gives rise to two mature miRNAs (miR-199a-5p and miR-199a-3p). These microRNAs are key regulators of post-transcriptional gene expression, affecting cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and angiogenesis. MIR199A2 has substantial roles in various diseases, especially multiple cancers, by regulating genes involved in tumor growth and invasiveness, and modulating pathways such as HIF1α signaling and Smad1-driven BMP signaling. Differential methylation and promoter regulation of MIR199A2 affect its expression in normal and diseased tissues. It is a subject of research both as a disease biomarker and a candidate therapeutic target for intervention in cancer and tissue regeneration.
