MicroRNA-204 (miR-204) is a highly conserved, small non-coding RNA molecule predominantly expressed in the eye, blood vessels, kidney, and other tissues, where it plays a crucial role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. In humans, it is encoded by the MIR204 gene, located in an intron of the TRPM3 gene on chromosome 9. miR-204 is essential for normal development and function of the lymphatic system, modulates endothelial and microglial cell homeostasis, and protects retinal structure and function by regulating phagolysosomal activity and lipid metabolism. Dysregulation of miR-204 is implicated in various pathophysiological states, including cardiovascular and renal diseases, inherited retinal diseases, and several cancer types. While there are currently no approved drugs specifically targeting miR-204, its clear functional roles in disease have made it a focus for biomarker discovery and therapeutic exploration[1][2][3][4].
