MicroRNA 208b is a highly conserved, muscle-specific non-coding RNA molecule encoded by an intron of the Myh7 gene. It is expressed primarily in cardiac and skeletal muscle tissue, where it regulates muscle fiber type specification and gene expression by targeting mRNAs through binding to their 3′ untranslated regions, leading to inhibition of protein translation. miR-208b functions in a network with other myomiRs and targets (e.g., Mettl8), playing an important role in the transition from fast-twitch to slow-twitch muscle fibers and influencing normal muscle development as well as disease states, such as cardiac remodeling and skeletal muscle pathology[1][4]. It is increasingly recognized as a valuable biomarker for myocardial injury, and experimental therapeutics are focused on modulating its activity for potential disease intervention.
