MicroRNA 216a is a highly conserved, non-coding RNA of about 22 nucleotides, predominantly expressed in the pancreas, with roles in the regulation of β-cell and acinar cell growth, apoptosis, and differentiation. It modulates important cellular processes by targeting genes such as SNIP1 and smad7, thus influencing skeletal muscle proliferation and differentiation, as well as pancreatic function. Its levels are elevated in cancerous tissues and in circulation, serving as a promising biomarker for pancreatic and other cancers. Studies support its role as a tumor suppressor, regulating signaling pathways such as Hippo and TGF-β, which are critical in tumor progression and cellular homeostasis.
