MicroRNA 219a-2 is a non-coding RNA encoded in the human genome, acting through base pairing with complementary mRNA sequences to induce gene silencing and post-transcriptional regulation[1][4][5]. It is a major precursor (along with miR-219-1) for mature miR-219, and highly expressed in brain tissue, especially involved in oligodendrocyte lineage differentiation and myelination. The molecule is also implicated in tumor suppression, participating in cell cycle control, apoptosis, and repressing gene targets like HPSE, cyclin D1, MDM2 in various cancers. Downregulation or epigenetic silencing (e.g., by environmental agents such as triclosan) of MIR219A2 is linked to cancer progression, neurodevelopmental, and neurodegenerative disorders. Therapeutic manipulation of miR-219a-2 is under investigation, with utility in oncology and CNS pathologies, but application is limited by specificity and delivery concerns[1][4][5].
