Overview

MicroRNA 25 (miR-25) is a highly conserved, small non-coding RNA molecule from the microRNA family that functions as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression[1][3][5]. It is encoded as part of the miR-106b-25 cluster located within intron 13 of the MCM7 gene on chromosome 7q22 in humans, and plays crucial roles in physiological and pathophysiological processes through base-pairing with target mRNAs, destabilizing them or repressing their translation[1][5]. miR-25 is implicated in cell proliferation, cell cycle progression, apoptosis, differentiation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and calcium handling[1][2]. Aberrant expression of miR-25 is associated with a variety of diseases, notably serving as an oncogene in multiple tumor types, a regulator in cardiovascular disorders (such as heart failure and cardiac hypertrophy), metabolic diseases (including diabetes), neurodegeneration, and kidney as well as inflammatory and fibrotic diseases[1][2][6]. In clinical and experimental settings, miR-25 is being investigated both as a disease biomarker (notably in cancer and heart failure) and as a therapeutic target, particularly through antisense inhibitors (antagomiRs)[1][7].
