Overview

MicroRNA 30a-5p (miR-30a-5p) is a highly conserved, small non-coding RNA molecule that plays a critical role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. It belongs to the miR-30 family and is primarily recognized for its tumor-suppressive properties across a wide range of human malignancies, including lung, breast, and gastric cancers. By binding to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of various oncogenic mRNAs, such as IGF-1R, BCL9, and ZEB2, miR-30a-5p inhibits cell proliferation, induces apoptosis, and suppresses the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Beyond oncology, it is involved in regulating autophagy and has been implicated in cardiovascular and renal pathologies. Although miR-30a-5p is frequently downregulated in tumors, its therapeutic potential is being explored through the development of miRNA mimics designed to restore its regulatory function. However, clinical translation faces significant challenges, including the risk of off-target effects due to the broad spectrum of genes regulated by a single miRNA and the need for stable, tissue-specific delivery systems.
