MicroRNA 3120 (miR-3120) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule processed from an intronic region of the dynamin-3 gene. It is classified as a “mirror” microRNA because it is produced from the sense strand of the locus, while the antisense strand encodes miR-214. miR-3120 is primarily found in neuronal cells, where it regulates key aspects of vesicle trafficking by directly targeting the mRNAs of heat shock cognate protein 70 (Hsc70, also known as HSPA8) and the co-chaperone auxilin. By downregulating these targets, miR-3120 inhibits the uncoating of clathrin-coated vesicles, a critical step in synaptic vesicle recycling and endocytosis. Although it plays a specific, well-characterized role in neural vesicle cycling, miR-3120 is not regarded as a conventional therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. There are currently no recognized drugs that interact directly with miR-3120, and it is not used as a biomarker or therapeutic agent[1][3][4][7]. Note: - miR-3120 should not be confused with protein-coding genes or classical drug targets; it is a regulatory RNA with specialized functions primarily documented in neurons. - Disease roles, clinical utility, and safety concerns are not well characterized, and no direct therapeutic interventions—or drugs—target this microRNA.
