Overview

MicroRNA 3121 (MIR3121) is a small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecule found in humans and annotated as hsa-mir-3121. Like other microRNAs, MIR3121 is involved in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, primarily by binding to complementary sequences within mRNAs to suppress protein synthesis or promote mRNA degradation[3][4]. The 3p isoform of MIR3121 (miR-3121-3p) has been elucidated as a key regulator of Rap1GAP, a tumor suppressor, in papillary thyroid cancer; it promotes tumor cell migration, proliferation, and invasion by inhibiting Rap1GAP, thereby enhancing MAPK pathway activity[1]. MicroRNAs, including miR-3121-3p, can act as both biomarkers and therapeutic targets, but direct clinical therapeutics or drugs targeting MIR3121 have not been documented in current sources. Safety concerns for microRNA-based therapies center around their multi-target regulation and the possibility of unanticipated effects in healthy tissues[4].
