MicroRNA 3168 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (approximately 20-24 nucleotides long) that functions in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to specific mRNAs, leading to their degradation or translation inhibition. Like other microRNAs, it is transcribed as a primary transcript by RNA polymerase II, processed by Drosha and Dicer enzymes, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which guides target recognition and regulatory effect. In the context of disease, MIR3168 has been observed to be significantly upregulated in colorectal cancer with peritoneal metastasis and may regulate the expression of critical cancer pathways, including EGFR and c-Met, via interactions with intermediary molecules such as ribosomal protein L17 (RPL17), Y-box binding protein 1 (YBX1), and bradykinin receptor B2 (BDKRB2). Its status as a potential biomarker makes it relevant for disease monitoring, but it is not currently a direct drug target.
