Overview

MicroRNA 3178 (miR-3178) is a short non-coding RNA molecule that functions primarily as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression within cells[6]. In the context of cancer, miR-3178 has been shown to act as a tumor suppressor, particularly in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), where it is significantly downregulated compared to other breast cancer subtypes[1][2]. Restoration of miR-3178 expression leads to inhibition of cell proliferation, invasion, migration, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), largely by directly targeting and downregulating the oncogene Notch1[1][2]. As such, miR-3178 is considered a potential therapeutic target and a prognostic biomarker in TNBC, with its lowered expression associated with worse clinical outcomes. No approved drugs are currently known to modulate miR-3178 in a therapeutic context.
