MicroRNA 3179-3p (MIR3179-3) is a non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA. Like other microRNAs, it typically functions in the cytoplasm to negatively regulate the expression of specific target genes via sequence-specific binding to messenger RNA 3′ untranslated regions. In addition, MIR3179-3 has been shown to possess intriguing enhancer-like features, being capable of upregulating transcription of neighboring genes such as ABCC6 and PKD1P1 when overexpressed in cell culture. Experimental evidence suggests these effects are associated with chromatin changes characteristic of enhancer regions. There is no current evidence linking MIR3179-3 directly to major diseases or therapeutic drugs, and its biological and pathological roles remain poorly defined relative to more established microRNAs
