Overview

microRNA 3180-5p (miR-3180-5p) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the mir-3180 microRNA family, identified in humans and other primates. MicroRNAs such as miR-3180-5p regulate the expression of target genes, primarily through binding to the 3' untranslated regions (3' UTR) of messenger RNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation. In molecular and cellular studies, miR-3180-5p has been shown to promote cell proliferation, particularly in human bladder smooth muscle cells, by suppressing the expression of the PODN gene (encodes podocan), thereby activating the cdk2 signaling pathway and facilitating the G1/S cell cycle transition. Overexpression of miR-3180-5p is associated with proliferative responses and has been implicated in the pathophysiology of cancer, including suggested roles in liver carcinogenesis. It is considered a potential molecular target for understanding and manipulating cell proliferation in disease and tissue engineering.
