Overview

MicroRNA 3181 is a short (20–24 nucleotides), non-coding RNA of the microRNA (miRNA) class, which regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in human cells. miRNAs are typically transcribed as part of longer primary transcripts, processed to short stem-loop precursors by Drosha, then to mature miRNAs by Dicer, and incorporated into RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISC). The mature miRNA guides the complex to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, leading to translational repression or mRNA destabilization and degradation. While the biological and pathological roles of many miRNAs are well-established, no specific functional or disease associations have been described for MicroRNA 3181 (MIR3181) to date. MIR3181 (microRNA 3181) is a specific human microRNA locus (HGNC: 38378, NCBI Gene: 100422972) with the non-coding RNA annotation. As a microRNA, it is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor, but is classified under small, non-coding, regulatory RNAs that act via RNA interference pathways. There is currently no evidence that MIR3181 is a direct therapeutic target or has established drug interactions, nor is it known to be used as a biomarker in clinical settings. The general functions of miRNAs include fine-tuning of gene expression, control of cell proliferation and differentiation, and participation in development, homeostasis, and disease. Disease roles for miRNAs as a class include a wide range of human diseases (including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, immune disorders, etc.), but MIR3181 itself has not been specifically implicated.
