Overview

MicroRNA 3187 (MIR3187) is a member of the human microRNA family, encoded by the MIR3187 gene located on chromosome 19. Like other microRNAs, MIR3187 is a short (20-24 nucleotides), non-coding RNA produced through a multi-step processing pathway: transcription by RNA polymerase II, cleavage by the Drosha enzyme to form a pre-miRNA, and final processing by Dicer to yield the mature miRNA. Mature MIR3187 is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it binds to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, typically resulting in repression of translation or mRNA degradation. Altered expression of MIR3187 is associated with certain congenital disorders and may also play a role in neoplastic and other disease physiology.
