MicroRNA 3201 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (20–24 nucleotides in length) that belongs to the microRNA family. MicroRNAs regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or translational repression[1][5][7]. MIR3201 has been identified in humans but its direct biological functions and molecular targets remain poorly characterized and are subject to ongoing research. It has been investigated mainly as a circulating biomarker in blood for prognosis and treatment response in select cancers, particularly in hepatocellular carcinoma, where lower levels in blood correlate with better response to therapy and prolonged survival after hepatic resection or radiofrequency ablation[2]. The expression pattern of miR-3201 has also been observed to change in other cancers, such as being decreased in recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer and increased in the serum of melanoma patients; its precise oncogenic or tumor-suppressive role, however, appears to be tissue- and context-specific and is not fully understood[2]. MIR3201 is not a therapeutic target in the classical sense (e.g., not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or ion channel), but rather is a regulatory RNA molecule with potential biomarker utility.
