microRNA 320e (MIR320E) is a non-coding RNA gene located within intron 3 of the PRKD2 gene on chromosome 19q13.32 in humans. It is part of the miR-320 family, whose members function as tumor suppressors by inhibiting proliferation, inducing cell cycle arrest, and modulating EMT in multiple cancer types. MIR320E acts by post-transcriptional regulation of various putative target genes, including those with tumor-suppressor functions (e.g., PP2R2C, IRF6, ONECUT2, CPEB2). Elevated expression of MIR320E has been associated with poorer outcomes in colorectal cancer, indicating a role as a negative prognostic biomarker. The full scope of its mechanistic role and regulated pathways remains under investigation, and direct therapeutic targeting has not yet entered clinical practice.
As a microRNA, MIR320E regulates gene expression by binding to target mRNAs, typically resulting in inhibition of protein translation or promotion of mRNA degradation. Indirect mechanisms involve suppression of cell proliferation and modulation of EMT.
