Overview

MicroRNA 337 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that functions primarily as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. It is transcribed from the human genome as a precursor molecule, which is subsequently processed into mature miR-337. miR-337 acts as a tumor suppressor in multiple cancer types, typically by downregulating genes involved in cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and adhesion, and by promoting apoptosis. Specific targets include cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) in breast cancer[1] and matrix metalloproteinase 14 (MMP-14) in neuroblastoma[2]. miR-337 is under-expressed in several human cancers, and its upregulation suppresses tumor progression and metastasis[1][2]. High expression of miR-337 is associated with favorable outcomes in various malignancies, making it a promising therapeutic target and prognostic biomarker.

Mechanism of action

Direct repression of target mRNAs by binding to their 3′-UTR. Transcriptional repression by binding gene promoters and recruiting Argonaute 2 for chromatin modification and reduced transcription (notably for MMP-14 in neuroblastoma). Sensitization of cancer cells to chemotherapy by modulating key survival pathways.
