Overview

MicroRNA 373 (miR-373) is a small, noncoding RNA of approximately 22 nucleotides that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by either repressing translation or degrading target mRNAs. It was initially identified as an embryonic stem cell-specific microRNA and has been extensively studied for its roles in both promoting and suppressing tumorigenesis, depending on tissue and molecular context. miR-373 participates in regulating the cell cycle, proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion, and has been implicated as a therapeutic target and biomarker in several types of cancer, such as non-small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, cervical cancer, and testicular germ cell tumors. It can modulate gene expression via conventional mRNA targeting as well as by inducing promoter-driven transcription in select situations.
