Overview

MicroRNA 378f (miR-378f) is a small, noncoding RNA molecule that is part of the miR-378 family. Like other microRNAs, miR-378f regulates gene expression by base-pairing with target mRNA transcripts, causing their degradation or inhibiting translation. The miR-378 family (including miR-378, miR-378a, miR-378b, etc.) has been shown to play significant roles in cancer progression (regulation of tumor suppressors such as Sufu and Fus-1), cell survival, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. miR-378 family members have tissue- and context-specific functions, and contribute to both normal developmental and disease processes. The role of miR-378f specifically is presumably similar to its closely related family members, but high-confidence, functionally distinct studies on the "f" variant are currently limited in the public literature. Mechanism of action

MicroRNAs, including miR-378f, act by binding to complementary sequences in the 3′ untranslated region (3′UTR) of messenger RNAs (mRNAs) of target genes, resulting in: - Translational repression or mRNA degradation of target genes Therapeutic inhibitors (antagomirs, antimiRs) would block miR-378f function and potentially de-repress target gene expression.
