MicroRNA 383 (miR-383) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule in the microRNA family that functions primarily in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, leading to translational repression or destabilization. miR-383 has been identified as a tumor suppressor in several cancer types, typically downregulated in tumor tissues. It regulates key cellular processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and cell cycle progression by targeting various mRNAs including PAX6, Gadd45g, VEGFA, AKT3, and others. miR-383 influences cancer cell behavior and is a potential biomarker for cancer progression and prognosis. It also mediates sensitivity to DNA-damaging agents, suggesting potential in cancer therapy. No approved drugs currently target miR-383 directly, but its modulation is under investigation preclinically for cancer therapy and as a biomarker.
