microRNA 4261 (miR-4261) is a small non-coding RNA molecule that functions post-transcriptionally to regulate gene expression by binding to the 3’ untranslated regions of specific mRNAs, causing translational repression or degradation[3][4]. It is upregulated in colorectal cancer, where it directly targets and suppresses the tumor suppressor gene MCC, leading to enhanced cancer cell proliferation and migration[1]. Therapeutic inhibition of miR-4261 in preclinical models attenuates tumor growth, supporting its consideration as a therapeutic target in oncology. miR-4261 is also expressed in the brain and is predicted to regulate genes such as ATN1 and CREBBP, suggesting a broader role in neuronal development and possible implication in neurodegenerative disease, although direct functional links are less well established[2]. There are currently no clinically approved drugs specifically targeting miR-4261, but miRNA inhibition technologies provide a plausible avenue for further research and development.
