Overview

microRNA-4262 (miR-4262) is a small non-coding RNA molecule that plays a critical role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. It is involved in various cellular processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, and migration, by targeting the 3'-untranslated regions of specific mRNAs such as PTEN and KLF6. In many cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer and breast cancer, miR-4262 is often upregulated and acts as an oncomiR by promoting tumor growth and conferring resistance to chemotherapeutic agents like paclitaxel. Conversely, in other contexts like colon cancer, it has been reported to act as a tumor suppressor. Due to its significant role in disease progression and drug resistance, miR-4262 is being investigated as both a diagnostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target for RNA-based interventions.

Mechanism of action

miR-4262 functions by binding to the 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR) of target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their degradation or the inhibition of their translation. Key targets include PTEN, KLF6, KLF15, and GALNT4. In the context of cancer, it often acts by suppressing tumor suppressor genes, thereby activating oncogenic signaling pathways such as PI3K/Akt.
