MicroRNA 4274 (miR-4274)

Target
miR-4274
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 4274 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (microRNA) implicated in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding complementary sequences in target messenger RNAs, resulting in their degradation or translational repression. It is encoded within the second intron of the SORCS2 gene and shown to regulate LAMA4, which encodes an alpha-4 laminin chain associated with cell migration and the malignant phenotype in basal-like breast cancer. Expression and regulatory effects of miR-4274 are observed in the nervous system and kidneys, though its broad biological and disease roles remain understudied. While miR-4274 is an active participant in gene regulatory networks, it is not traditionally categorized as a therapeutic target, but modulation of its activity may carry relevance as a biomarker or for future RNA-targeting strategies.

02

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression (by binding to target mRNAs and promoting their degradation or inhibiting translation)
03

Disease associations

Cancer (notably, basal-like breast carcinoma and possibly others due to regulation of LAMA4, which has roles in cancer cell migration and phenotype)Potential involvement in diseases related to nervous system and kidney function due to tissue expression pattern
04

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker for basal-like breast carcinoma, due to its regulatory interactions with LAMA4 and SORCS2 in this subtype. However, this is preliminary and not established clinically.
