Overview

MicroRNA 4278 (MIR4278, hsa-mir-4278) is a small non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA (miRNA) family in humans. MiRNAs are master regulators of gene expression, acting primarily via RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation. MIR4278 has been implicated in tumor suppression, with evidence suggesting roles in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest, contributing to cancer pathogenesis and survival outcomes[2]. It regulates expression of multiple target genes, and aberrant expression or genetic alterations near its locus have been associated with disease risk, including in cancer and in certain clinically relevant chromosomal deletions[2]. There are currently no known drugs that directly target MIR4278, nor is it established as a classical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Its main mechanism is through base-pairing with complementary sequences in messenger RNA, leading to mRNA destabilization and inhibition of protein translation[3][6]. As typical for microRNAs, MIR4278 is not itself a disease biomarker or therapy target, although its expression pattern may carry some diagnostic or prognostic information in research contexts.
