microRNA 4281 (miR-4281, also known as hsa-mir-4281 or MIR4281) is a small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, which functions primarily in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Like other microRNAs, miR-4281 is processed from a longer primary transcript into a mature ~22 nucleotide RNA that base-pairs with target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or inhibition of translation. miR-4281 has been detected as upregulated in the serum of breast cancer patients, indicating a possible role as a disease biomarker. However, it is not itself a receptor, enzyme, or classic drug target, but rather a regulatory RNA involved in gene silencing mechanisms[1][2][4][6]. microRNA 4281 is classified as a microRNA, a member of the large family of non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression mainly at the post-transcriptional level by binding to target mRNAs[2][4][6][7]. It is not a classical therapeutic target such as a protein receptor, enzyme, transporter, or transcription factor. Instead, the interest in miR-4281, as described in the literature, is largely as a potential disease biomarker—especially in the context of breast cancer, where it has been found to be upregulated in patient samples compared to healthy controls[1]. There is currently no information indicating that this microRNA is directly targeted by any approved drugs, nor are there known mechanism of action or safety concerns in a therapeutic context.
