MicroRNA-4287 (miR-4287) is a small non-coding RNA molecule located within the intron of the SCARA5 gene on chromosome 8p21.1. It functions as a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer, where its expression is significantly reduced in tumor tissues compared to normal tissue. miR-4287 exerts its effect by regulating cell cycle progression (increasing G2/M arrest) and suppressing processes associated with tumor aggressiveness, such as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), via direct repression of the EMT mediator SLUG and indirect repression of the stemness marker CD44. Its downregulation is linked to enhanced metastatic potential and progression of prostate cancer. miR-4287 may serve as a diagnostic biomarker for prostate cancer and is part of a cluster of tumor-suppressive microRNAs frequently deleted in advanced prostate malignancies.
As a microRNA, it acts via post-transcriptional repression of target mRNAs, notably SLUG and indirectly CD44.
