Overview

MicroRNA 4482 (miR-4482) is a small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecule (about 21–23 nucleotides) in humans that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level[3][4]. It primarily binds to the 3’ untranslated region (UTR) of target messenger RNAs, such as ERG mRNA in prostate cancer, suppressing their translation or promoting their degradation[1]. miR-4482 is downregulated in prostate cancer, and restoration of its expression can reduce cell proliferation, migration, and angiogenic gene expression by decreasing ERG levels[1]. Given these features, miR-4482 is under investigation as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target, notably in prostate cancer, but also shows altered expression in other diseases including immune and neurological disorders[1]. As with other microRNAs, major therapeutic challenges include specificity, delivery, and risk of broad gene regulatory effects[3][4].

Mechanism of action

miR-4482 binds to target mRNA (notably ERG mRNA) 3’UTR regions to suppress translation or promote degradation, thereby downregulating target gene and protein expression[1][3][4].
