Overview

MicroRNA 450b-5p (miR-450b-5p) is a mature, non-coding RNA molecule that functions as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. It is derived from the MIR450B precursor and exerts its biological effects by binding to the 3'-untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, such as ACTB, SFRP2, and SIAH1, resulting in mRNA degradation or translational inhibition [1, 4]. In oncology, miR-450b-5p often acts as an oncomir, where its upregulation is linked to increased cell proliferation, invasion, and resistance to chemotherapy, particularly platinum-based agents in ovarian cancer [1, 2]. It is also implicated in the progression of colorectal cancer, where it is induced by oncogenic KRAS signaling to activate the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway [4]. Beyond its role in cancer, miR-450b-5p is involved in physiological processes like myogenic and osteogenic differentiation, as well as pathological states including acute lung injury and multiple sclerosis [3, 5]. Due to its stability in biofluids, it is being explored as a non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarker, although therapeutic applications using miRNA mimics or antagomirs are currently limited to preclinical research [1, 7].
