Overview

MicroRNA 4516 (miR-4516) is a small, endogenous non-coding RNA (approximately 20-24 nucleotides) that acts as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression by binding to the 3'-untranslated regions of target messenger RNAs, leading to repression of translation or mRNA degradation. MiR-4516 has been implicated in regulating cellular processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, EMT, autophagy, and motility. It directly targets genes involved in stress response, cancer cell migration/invasion (e.g., OTX1 in pancreatic and retinal pigment epithelial cells, PTPN14 in glioblastoma), and ribosome function (e.g., RPL37, UBA52). MiR-4516 expression levels serve as a biomarker for prognosis in certain cancers and may also indicate environmental exposure to air pollutants. It is part of the broader microRNA family and does not encode a protein[1][2][3][4].

Mechanism of action

No conventional mechanism of action for drugs since miR-4516 is a regulatory RNA, not a protein; experimentally, mechanisms involve miRNA mimic or inhibition, leading to altered expression of its targets such as PTPN14 and OTX1[2][3].
