Non-coding RNA, MicroRNA (miRNA) family

Overview

MicroRNA 4518 (MIR4518) is a human gene encoding a small (~22 nucleotide) non-coding RNA that functions as part of the microRNA (miRNA) family. MiRNAs are transcribed from specific genes as a primary transcript, processed into a hairpin precursor, exported from the nucleus, and further processed by Dicer into a mature miRNA molecule. The mature MIR4518, like other miRNAs, is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it binds target messenger RNAs through sequence complementarity, leading to either translation inhibition or mRNA degradation. MicroRNAs control a broad spectrum of biological processes post-transcriptionally and are involved in the fine-tuning of gene expression. While microRNAs as a class are crucial in diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and cardiovascular disease, MIR4518 itself does not currently have well-defined functions or disease roles in the literature[2][3][4][5].
