MicroRNA 4651 (miR-4651)

Target
miR-4651
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 4651 (miR-4651) is a small non-coding single-stranded RNA (approximately 18–24 nucleotides) encoded on chromosome 7, functioning as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression. It is downregulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and its overexpression suppresses tumor cell growth and promotes apoptosis, in part by directly targeting and downregulating forkhead box protein P4 (FOXP4). miR-4651 is also suggested to act as a tumor suppressor and potential prognostic biomarker for HCC progression[1]. No drugs are currently in clinical use directly targeting miR-4651, but chemically modified oligonucleotide inhibitors are commercially available for research purposes[2].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for direct drugs; miR-4651 acts by binding to target mRNAs and repressing gene expression, primarily via translational inhibition or mRNA degradation[1].

03

Biological functions

Gene silencing (post-transcriptional regulation)Regulation of cell proliferationRegulation of apoptosis
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably hepatocellular carcinoma)
05

Safety considerations

Potential off-target effects and delivery challenges if targeted therapeutically (general to microRNA therapeutics, not specific to miR-4651)
06

Biomarkers

Prognostic biomarker in hepatocellular carcinoma (reduced expression associated with poor prognosis)[1]
